Ms. Melinda Holt
2009 - 2010 MYC Princess

Ms. Melina Holt - MYC Princess

My name is Melinda Holt, and I am a junior at Chesapeake High School in Pasadena, Maryland. My best traits are that I’m humorous, nice, polite, caring, and strong. In school, I am taking Pre-Calculus, Physics, U.S History honors, German, Advanced Placement English Language and Composition, Psychology, and Human Physiology. In the past I have taken Advanced Placement European History, Honors Chemistry, Honors French 3, Spanish 2, Honors English and Honors Algebra 2. I know the fundamentals of four languages: French, Spanish, German, and English. These challenging classes will help me achieve my goal which is to major in Pre-medicine in college; it will be a great honor to get to that level.

I have lived in Pasadena all my life and have grown up on the water. It’s a great privilege to live on the water; many don’t have the access like I do. Many memories have accumulated through the years living in this environment including: jumping off my pier, many canoe rides, and watching my cat boogie board. Living so close to nature makes me appreciate the balance of nature and gives me a sense of respect for our environment. The appreciation I have towards keeping our planet clean and eco-friendly has caused me to join the Environmental club in high school and to recycle at home. Also, I chose to use biodegradable cloth bags when going grocery shopping instead of using plastic bags and I chose to limit the amount of plastic bottles I drink from and instead use stainless steel bottles. All of these decisions will help our eco-system which is in desperate need of help. Choices you make today affect the future, so make your choices carefully.

Chesapeake High School sports are an important part of my life as an academic student and participant. In the winter of my freshman year, I participated in Cheerleading in which my team won first place at counties. Then in the spring, I competed in Gymnastics and our team won first place in counties and placed 3rd at regionals. In my sophomore year, I joined cheerleading again and in the fall we received first place again, then in winter we got second, unfortunately. Also in the spring I joined Tennis. Now I’m currently enrolled in Dance Company class and plan on joining Tennis in the spring season for my second year.

Outside of School, sports have also been a major influence in maintaining a drive and focus to never give up and work hard till you achieve your goal. When I set my mind on achieving a goal, I work hard until I accomplish it or feel as if I did the best I could. I chose to work hard to feel a sense of pride. When I took ballet, tap, and jazz classes at the Howard County Center of Arts, it was a rewarding experience. The basic skills I learned in those three years set me up for the success I had in gymnastics. When I was six, I attended gymnastics at Docksiders gym, then stopped when I wanted to join dance. Once I felt I had mastered dance I wanted to move on. I went back to gymnastics at All-Pro gymnastics for two years; I had been working hard on improving my skills to get up to a competitive level. I had to stop classes because I had just started high school and it was becoming too much to handle and instead I joined cheerleading.

In the summer, I have participated every year for the past three years in Camp Hope. This summer program is led by the United Methodist Church. This is a four week program in which churches in Maryland, and some from New York, travel to Frostburg for a week to serve other people. Camp Hope is a rewarding camp that helps people in need; it helps teenagers realize that there are people out there that require our help. Since teenagers can be very selfish; when we’re put in this environment, it's no longer about what we need or what we want, it’s what they need and what we can do to help. I feel a sense of sorrow to those who don’t have the privileges that I have. The basic things like a fresh coat of paint or a new porch that they can actually walk on without worrying they will fall, brings such joy and appreciation for the work we get done in one week. When we work together as a team, and not as selfish teenagers, we achieve the most. I love Camp Hope because I like the feeling when you know you just helped lift someone’s spirit to help make their lives better.

I have received many awards and honors through school for sports and extracurricular activities. This includes two gold medals and one silver medal in cheerleading. In gymnastics I received one gold medal. For outstanding academic achievement I have received acceptance letters to the People to People to be a student ambassador in many foreign countries and travel through them. Also, I have recently received two acceptance letters to attend congressional student leadership conferences through Lead America Medicine and healthcare. Receiving these awards has not been a piece of cake; it takes effort and dedication to achieve them.

As your new Princess of the Maryland Yacht Club, I will bring insightful ideas and will always have respect for the people. My main goal in being the Princess is to educate, persuade, and influence others to participate in making our environment a healthy, homeostatic eco-system. I’m also looking forward to the future ball I will be attending and hopefully I will meet most of the members at these balls, while supporting other clubs around our region. In my eyes; the Maryland Yacht Club is a place to relax, laugh, and share stories.
